Aimless

Sundays were never my best days... Historically speaking. They were the days when the fun was over and I had to get ready to go to bed, since I had school the next day. The same goes for college, even though my mom wasn't the one enforcing the law anymore.

But this Sunday was a day when nothing made any sense. Actions, Reactions, Thought, feelings. They were all confused and just went in a circles of nothingness.

My cure to such days is a long night sleep. I shall, hopefully, recover by then...

Many life-changing decisions were made since my last blog entry.

I did not get to finish filling the application for my US working visa. I submitted my resignation, paid my bills, transfered the lease of my apartment, sold my car, bought a ticket and landed in Beirut on the 2nd of May,2007.

And only then, I realized that it was the best thing I have ever done.

Now I am working in Beirut at a company called Sukleen, which raises an eyebrow whenever I mention the name to my Lebanese friends. And for those who don't know, Sukleen is the largest trash collecting company in Lebanon, thus the eyebrow!!!

For the time being, I am enjoying my time with my family and friends and planning my next career move.

Do you remember this piece of machine?

Where I come from, it is not related to hippies or the anything of that sort. When I see what is known in Lebanon as the "VOLZZ", I remember all the electric contracting equipment, since that was my father's occupation. A whole arsenal of wire bundles of different gauges and colors, in addition to the orange pipes (narbish or narbish, i dont know). It also bring memories of crates of Oranges and Lemons from our small orchard (the piece of Land is called "il Zirnebeh"). It is also associated with going to school, since that was one of the favorite mode of transportation for the promising young masses, and more specifically with a man of the name "Abu Hassan Salemeh", a driver who used to own one of these and had the Naughtiest kids at school (Kadmous, in Tyre).

I saw one here in th heart of the Midwest today. The mere sound of that Automobile (which, of all the cars in the world, can only be mistaken for an older VW beetle) gave rise to an endless array of old memories.

The VOLZZZZ. The car of the people.

And as an engineering tidbit: Did you know that its engine, as well as the beetle's did not use water for cooling??

Watching this picture reminded me of a grim fact about us, "the human race". WE JUST FORGET, Want to forget or just shovel those unwanted memories into the back of our skulls. What got to me tonight is that while I am going out, playing sports and watching movies. The mother, father, uncle and siblings of that girl are sitting somewhere and dealing with the implication of loosing her.

Chicago. A bustling city of 2.8 million souls. A small Dunkin Dougnuts stand. The guy looks Japanese, turns out he is Nepalese. "where are guys from", he asked?. "Lebanon", we replied. "You Lebanese are brave people, fighting those Israelis.", he comments with a thick accent. We smile. I take my order. My friend, who likes the conversation, tells him how beautiful Lebanon is. I sit, take out my snadwish, with "You Lebanese are brave people" echoes in my ears over and over and over.....

Silently sitting on the floor of my half-empty apartement, my guts were boiling with anger and bitterness as I read Robert Fisk's Latest Columns. It is titled: "How easy it is to put hatred on a map".

The most sickening part is this:

“Buy Time magazine, dear reader, turn to page 30, and what will you find? "How to Tell Sunnis and Shi'ites Apart." Helpful, uh? And after this, are columns of useful, divisive information. "Names," for example. "Some names carry sectarian markers... Abu Bakr, Omar and Uthman ... men with these names are almost certainly Sunni. Those called Abdel-Hussein and Abdel-Zahra," (I have never in met an "Abdel-Zahra" by the way) "are most likely Shi'ite." Then there are columns headed "Prayer", "Mosques", "Homes", "Accents" and "Dialects", even - heaven spare us - "cars". The last, for those readers not already reeling in disbelief, tells us which car stickers to look out for (spot a picture of Imam Ali and you know the driver is Shia) or which licence plate (Anbar province registrations, for instance) means a probable Sunni driver.”

What is sad and Ironic is that even a westerner, Robert Fisk, is telling about the conspiracy and we are still not listening. Sectarianism is so deeply rooted in our subconscious that even if we don’t like it, we either get swept by it or just watch it as a daily routine, but never manage condemn it. It is just a way of life.

They have changed the name of our part of the world many times: the Arab world, the Middle East, the new Middle East, the greater Middle East. While we are still label each other sunni, shia, who is more arab and who is less arab, while the truth is that it all does not matter to "them" as long as we fight and they reign.

Predominantly optimistic in nature, I believe that time is on our side and tides will sooner or later turn in our favor, and we would, slowly but surely, wake up from our prolonged hibernation.

My last project, inshalla...Testing Turbocharger Actuators. Interesting and fun, but not as high-tech as it sounds. It is a series of 3 sequential tests, about 45 minutes each, during which I have to watch a pointer, make some changes and enter data.Well anyway, I watch that Pointer all day, going back and forth.

As the pointer Going up, this place comes to mind. and this one too(Image by Sietske). Then she comes. Followed by him. and her.......

لو سؤلت عن هويتي لقلت: أنا مسلم لبناني. ولم أرى يوما تضارب بين هذا الإنتماء وذاك. لكني وبعد قرأة مقال المؤثر لزياد الرحباني، شعرت وكأني أقف كتفا لكتف مع الشيوعيين عند قوله "وعلينا أن نواجه هؤلاء دون الرفيق سماحة". وبالمناسبة، إن أسلوب زياد الرحباني الساخر لم يستهوني يوما. لم أكن أستمع لمسرحياته أو أي من برامجه. كنت أقول لمحبيه من أصدقائي أني فقط لا أحب طريقته بالتعبير عن رأيه، ولو إتفقت معه. لكنه قوله اليوم صادق وحق، والحق لا يعرف دين ، أديولوجية أو حزب سياسي.

The Mood - 2

The optimism I had flying around this afternoon, when I dropped a comment about Jamal's entry , hit rock bottom as I was reading the news from Libnan. What I like about Joseph Samaha, of Al-akhbar, is his simplicity in breaking down a complicated issue. Check out his latest one (sorry!! arabic only). He does not yell, call names or attack anyone (not viciously anyway). Forget NBN, NewTV, LBC and most definitely Future TV; they are all an insult to anyone's intelligence, but I have to admit, I still pay them visit every once in a while, with the exception Future TV, to get feel of whats going on.

Going back to Mr Samaha, his article today was amazing... amazingly depressing that is, and it took me 15 minutes of blindly staring at the screen to get myself to click for the next article.

In brief, Condy and Georgi are leading a counter-attack :

$10 billion to Afghanistan.
more billions to Iraq (which they will collect later, and we all know how)
An end to the negotiations in Palestine, and lot of $$$ to rebuild Abbas's own security forces, slowly but steadily for the next two years. (and to be honest, I don't know whats there to negotiating, they don't have anything yet!!!!)
More US escalation towards Iran, mainly in Iraq.
And most importantly, They are donating more billions of $$$$$$$$ to the........Lebanese prime minister. who is known for his transparency, honesty and decency during his previous years. He gracefully smiles as he sit at the right hand side of President Jacques Chirac. Then, at a press conference, he address th Lebanese people with his his usually sweet talk.

An offensive, lead by the "Bush and Allies L.L.C", and used as infantry (willingly and necessarily.. unwillingly) are the "Moderate Arab's" and the transparent , honest decent people like PM Saniora and our brothers in Fatah to lead us into a more "democratic" and economically prosperous future. Then we will all live, democratically, under the watchful eyes of the kings of Arabia and we will all know where our money spent.

All of this outside aid, and then minister Ahmad Fatfat, PM Sanior, Jounblat and the rest of the gang of elitist and warlords will disgustingly throw statements on the air, demanding that Lebanon be left out of international and regional conflict and "let it not be a battle field for other countries wars"

A sad thing that what is happening!!!!

All of that, and my boring Friday night has not even started......

Saddam, Again...

Like Rabid beasts, two "civilized" Iraqi Politicians debate the legitimacy of the excution of Saddam Houssein. They start of course by the name calling and then comes the inevitable scene when one of them, or both, leave the set. One calls the other, a persian spy, a safawi, and the other barks out some names that I did not comrehend, given the choas.The ironi is one of them is a member in a party called "المصالحة والتحرير", the party of reconciliation and liberation. He spoke about the shia, and I am one of them, using very provocative and demeaning way; I was definitely offended.I do not understand how the so-called cream of the crop in Iraq are supposed to achieve the so-called reconliation if they are at such a level of ignorance and hate (a civil war mixture).

As a Muslim,Shia and Arab, I denounce the timing and the way of the execution of Saddam and I blame both Shia and Sunni's in Iraq for the escalation that will follow. I had a feeling of shame and helplessness, just like the feeling I had when the announced the fall of Baghdad not so long back. It drives me mad that the Iraqis have not learnt from us, lebanese.

I would still want to see him dead, but why not finish the other trials, the mass murder of the Kurds using chemical weapons for example. Maybe the cover would have been blown, showing the American involvement in many of those murders. The chemical agents were ordered "by phone" from the US at the time when Saddam the the US #1 man.

Until ignorance and hate cease to be the dominant feeling on the streets of Iraq, I do not see how things can get any better.

He was executed today. The largest Iraqi community in the United States is celebrating here in town.
As far as I am concerned, it would be very hard claim that this dictator deserved any lesser punishment, but the timing was ruthless, unprecedented and unacceptable, not to mention that it reveals a deep lack of knowledge as far as the Muslim and Arab populations are concerned.

Once again, the Bush administrations proves that it is either extremely Middle-East -ignorant, or they are intentionally provoking division within the Iraqi community, or both.

My supervisor, a nice man in his fifth decade, came to me one late afternoon asking me about Lebanon, Iran's president and what I thought of the Conference about the Holocaust. I simple said that I do not agree with the way he flamboyantly declares the extermination of israel, but as much as any human being should condemn these acts, I was glad that subject as a holocausts is being talked about and debated, and not such a taboo anymore. I also asserted that the isrealis have been using these massacres, which were not done by us, to commit their massacres against us.

But today, I read an entry by Behi and was surprised…. What? White supremacists attended the conference. An article published BBC news, but since I have recently lost faith in BBC's neutrality, I looked somewhere else... The Independent, it was also mentioned there.

What a shame. What a shame!!!

The Civilized EU leaders met and decided their view and policies for us, the uncivilized world.

what's intriguing is their full support to PM Saniora, for after all, he is democratically (indirectly) elected by the people. On the other hand, the Palestinian people have to go hungry for months because they elected, democratically, someone who those same Civilized leaders do not agree with.

Also, another big news: UK drops fraud charges against officials in relation with the arms deal with the Saudi's, violating the international convention, as stated by one English officials. One of Blair's excuses..."it will hurt the war on terrorism". and it was also stated that the decision was "not be influenced by considerations of national economic interest".

I am struggling to keep my opinionated inclinations in check these days. For on one hand, I firmly believe that what the opposition is asking for is a fare and reasonable propositions. These propositions provide the right representation of the Lebanese population. In addition to that, I despise the current PM, Saniora, and the people/parties he represents for all they are doing and have done during the war in the summer (and even before all of that), and definitely want him out of that office. But on the other hand, I pray that all the diplomatic visit lead to a resolution and these demonstrations, while absolutely rightful, would come to an end as soon as possible. Although unlikely, Things could get out of hand.

Until then, I go on with my pursuit for some impartial blogs to monitor my political inclinations. Any suggestions??

It has always been considered that Lebanese politicians are individuals who eloquently bend the truth, are very effective at selling words and slogans and rarely delivering on their promises. In the mean time, “clean politicians” have always been sidelined and overshadowed. With leaders like Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and General Aoun, that not been the case.

I do not need much effort to relate to the extreme loyalty and respect that many Lebanese, especially the Muslim Shiite, pledge to Sayyed Hassan. He has been honest so far, following through with his promises, led the liberation of the southern part of Lebanon from occupation, and had shown a great deal of organization that led to many victories (that last one is open to debate, I know). I can also relate, but to a much lower extents, with the reason why many Christians in Lebanon cheer for General Aoun as well. Just like most other Lebanese sects, they are just utterly sick of dishonest politicians with shady pasts.

That being said, and in a scenario where the current demonstration lead to the forming a new clean government, If the new leadership fail to deliver on their promises (which includes, among other things, sharing the government with others, rebuilding, etc), That would be the Day I’d get close to losing hope and giving up on Lebanon. If such leadership would prove to be corrupt, I do not know how can any “clean leader” ever exist in the Lebanese political arena. If that happens, I still have no idea what would I do.

Settling in my Cubicle, day dreaming, eyeballs foolishly follows the flying icons on the screensaver against a black background. I think of Lebanon, Downtown, and what is going on, I stray and think of Jnoob, my mom, Tabeekh, and for some reason Dubai... Memories start rushing through my head uncontrollably.

Then it gets too much, I shake my head, wake up and go back to work mumbling to myself “It is not a way to start an efficient day at work”.

I have attempted to write a few entries in the last week or so, but I always finding it hard to follow through.

I struggle to hold off on my political views but always wind up writing about it. I try to be as unbiased as possible, but I can not help mentioning Geagea and Joumblat and Hariri and their bunch and how horrible they are performing. I try to look, imagine or consider the viewpoint of those who support those leaders and I fail drastically. Then I place the opposition leaders in one side of a balance (nasrallah, Aoun, Karameh, el Hoss, Berri, etc) with all their pro's and con's and the ruling bunch (Filtman, Hariri, Joumblat, Geagea, etc) in the other. Is it my inability to understand or what? I keep on repeating to myself "there should be something I am not able to see", otherwise how come people actually listen to them. Yet, I still fail to understand.

And I said I wanted to stay away from politics....

My other attempts were to try to express myself, and you probably have an idea where that ended... you named it…. Politics.

That is why I deleted it all and decided to write the above entry, which itself couldn’t escape the inescapable.

لا تنسَ الدعوة الى الاعتصام».. لم يقدر فارس سعيد على تمالك نفسه عندما اقترب من الرئيس أمين الجميل مطالباً إياه بالإعلان عن هذه الخطوة في ختام كلمته. لم يرد الاخير. رفع سقف خطابه لكنه لم يشر إلى الخطوات العملية. ضرب فارس سعيد جبينه بكفه. لقد انكشف في اللحظة الأصعب. الرجل يريد أن يدفن ابنه ومعه أحقاد وثارات أتت على أفراد كثر من عائلته. بينما يهتم سعيد ومن يمثل، بلحظة الاضطراب العقلي والسياسي والعصبي. بإشعال النار: هذه هي فرصتنا ولا يجوز أن نفوّتها كما فعلنا بعد 14 آذار!لم يكن فريق السلطة موفقاً أمس. لا الحشد يشبه يوم الحشد، ولا الخطاب له صلة بتعبئة بحجم ما حصل. وأكثر من ذلك. ثمة خلل مركزي في آلية التعبئة متصل بالموقف أكثر مما هو مرتبط بالآليات. إضراب جزئي في المدن المفترض أنها مركز ثقل هذا الفريق، ومشاركة شعبية مسيحية تقتصر على فريق “القوات اللبنانية” وبعض الكتائبيين، وتجنيد أقل بكثير مما رصد لجذب الشارع السني. وهذا لا يعني ان فريق السلطة تنقصه عصبية او جمهور او ادوات للقتال. لكن من المفيد القول إنه يصعب إدارة معركة سياسية شاملة بحسابات لا تتصل بما كانت عليه الأمور قبل أقل من عام.إضعاف العماد ميشال عون وتحييد الرئيس نبيه بري. هذا هو العنوان المشترك لعمل فريق السلطة الذي يقوده فعليا الآن كل من وليد جنبلاط وسمير جعجع. أما سعد الحريري فقد تاه وسط متطلبات أبرز مجرمي الحرب الاهلية. وهو وإن كان مقتنعاً بأن موقفه صحيح الآن، وأن الآخرين، وتحديداً حزب الله والتيار الوطني الحر، ليسوا في صفه، فهو يربط الأمر بالموقف من التحقيق في جريمة اغتيال والده الرئيس رفيق الحريري. لم ينتبه سعد الى أنه يصعب اتهام الآخرين بمحاباة قاتل مفترض هو سوريا، وهو يخوض تحالفاً مع قاتل مدان من أعلى سلطة قضائية في جريمة اغتيال رئيس وزراء سابق.. أليس بين من يشرع للمحكمة الدولية الآن من كان عضواً في المجلس العدلي الذي حكم بإدانة جعجع؟ وهو في الوقت نفسه شريك أشد رموز الحرب قسوة في قتاله الآخرين بواسطة آخرين... ألا يرى سعد الحريري أنه يصعب إقناع الناس بأن عليهم السير خلف جنبلاط وجعجع بدل نصر الله وعون؟انتهى التشييع، لكن الدم لا يزال حاراً، لكن فريق السلطة مستعجل أكثر مما ظهر على المجرمين من استعجال في تنفيذ جريمتهم والمخاطرة بعناصر كثيرة. ولا مكان للعقل البارد، ومع ذلك فإن باب الأسئلة مشرع بخلاف ما يرغب أصحاب كواتم الصوت من كتم للأنفاس ومنع أي سؤال او كلام عمن هو المستفيد من موجة القتل والتوتر الاخيرة؟كان حزب الكتائب يدخل مرحلة جديدة بعد قداس حريصا الشهير. ومحاضر اجتماعات قيادة هذا الحزب تكشف عن الخيبة الكتائبية من “التمادي القواتي في سرقة الشهداء والأمجاد”. تطور الأمر الى حدود أن بيار الجميل نفسه طلب استنفاراً على مستوى حضور الحزب في كل الأمكنة، طلب إعادة تنشيط الأقاليم ومضى في خطة كانت تمهد ببساطة لتولّيه منصب الرجل القوي في الحزب، الذي يمكن أن يمسك القرار بين رئيسين أدنى وأعلى. ثم كان النقاش في امكان تحييد الكتائب نفسها عن الصراع القائم “بين السنة والشيعة بواسطة المسيحيين”. كان الجدل قد وصل حدود الإقرار بأن المشاركة المسيحية ضئيلة في سلطة 14 آذار، وكان القرار أقرب الى تعايش من نوع مختلف مع الحالة العونية، مع تقدير ربما يكون أقرب الى وهم بأن الكتائب إن جددت يمكن أن تكون وريثة التيار الوطني، على قاعدة أن القاسم المشترك بين الكتائب و“القوات” انحصر في اعتبار حالة عون طارئة وتتجه صوب الضمور.مضى سمير جعجع في ترتيب أوضاعه. ومن النواحي كلها. تنظيمياً عمل من دون توقف على استعادة كل الكوادر. وعلى صعيد ترتيب الوضع الأمني للحزب وقياداته كان غسان توما يعود الى الواجهة. شرع له جعجع شخصياً الباب بإعلانه قيادياً في “القوات” ثم نشط الأخير في استعادة عشرات من الكوادر الذين سافروا على مراحل بعد توقف الحرب الاهلية وبعد توقيف سمير جعجع. ثم بدأت عمليات التدريب تحت حجة الأمن الخاص بالشخصيات والمراكز. وثمة وثائق وصور عن تدريبات لعناصر كثيرة من القوات في أكثر من منطقة لبنانية. وكان هناك في الوقت نفسه عملية استعادة المؤسسات المباشرة. وسيلة الإعلام المركزية أي المؤسسة اللبنانية للإرسال وإذاعة لبنان الحر. وفتح الباب أمام جمع المداخيل المالية من اكثر من جهة. والعمل على الارض على جبهتين: الاولى سرقة ما أمكن من الكتائبيين الذين يريدون عصبية أكثر حدة من التي قامت، وتهويل على التيار الوطني الحر من باب ترهيب تشهد له القرى والأزقة والجامعات.فجأة يعود السجال الداخلي الى ذروته. قوى المعارضة اجتمعت في طابور واحد بعد خروج أمل وحزب الله من الحكومة. واستنفار وتعبئة شعبية ظهرت مؤداها العملي في الاحتفال العوني في 15 تشرين الأول، لكن الخطة الاكثر عملانية كانت في الاستعداد لبرنامج تحرك مفتوح حتى استقالة الحكومة. ولم يكن هناك أمل لأي شيء آخر. رفع عنوان المحكمة الدولية، وفجأة تظهر الحاجة الى فعل ما يقلب الامور رأساً على عقب. مع كلام أميركي ضاغط تحت عنوان “تجديد ثورة الأرز” وسرعان ما يتم اختيار هدف لافت: بيار الجميل. ثم جاءت النتائج:1ــــــ دفع المعارضة الى التراجع عن الخطط وإدخالها في ارتباك مفتوح على امور كثيرة.2ــــــ اغتيال فاضح يدل على استعجال من قرره بطريقة تنفيذه في منطقة وضد شخصية تفتح باب السجال الأعنف ضد التيار الوطني الحر.3ــــــ استنفار العصبية التي قامت عليها المجموعات التابعة لتيار “المستقبل” والحزب التقدمي الاشتراكي ضد سوريا باعتبارها القاتل الدائم، وتحريك الشارع لأجل شعارات تتجاوز مطالب المعارضة الخاصة بالمشاركة.4ــــــ اختيار شخصية من حزب يصبح مضطراً لحسم خياره السياسي دون أي تردد كالذي عاشه سابقاً، ودفعه طوعاً او غصباً الى حضن المشروع الطائفي والمذهبي المتوتر الذي يقوده سمير جعجع.5ــــــ التسريع في إقرار المحكمة الدولية في مجلس الأمن ودفع الإحراج للقوى السياسية الداخلية ولا سيما الرئيس نبيه بري الى الحد الاقصى، بغية تشريع جلسة جديدة لمجلس الوزراء للمصادقة على ما اقره مجلس الأمن وتحويل الملف الى المجلس النيابي.ثمة أسئلة كثيرة وثمة معطيات كثيرة وثمة ما هو متصل بالتحقيقات نفسها التي تكشف عن ثغر كبيرة، وما يفتح الباب على ما هو اكثر تعقيداً في بلد يتجه صوب الصدام ما لم تتدخل جهات قادرة على جمع الكل في غرفة مقفلة حتى إشعار آخر!

Salaam!!

I have been trying to stay away from politics for a while, but I could not resist anymore. So.. Meet the new man on the block. His father was recently murdered, right after he was used to come home happy (as per his wife) once or twice a week for the last few months of his life, after meeting with the US most wanted man in Lebanon (and honorably so). Makes one wonder!!! Then meet his newly found friend and mentor, whose father was also murdered (by the Syrian regime, no one denies), and still went to bed with the same regime that killed his father for more than a decade. Then there are other members in the group, whose history speak for them.

Now... Going back to the new man; it is very strange that his father was assassinated at a time when the so called "hawks" controlled the major player in the region. A United States administration with the rightest of the right key players, which invaded another Arab country by lying to everyone in this world including its people and started a civil war; An administration that leads war that is slowly, and with cold blood, killing the Palestinian people, although indirectly; they have the right allies to do that. An administration infested with masterminds who are willing to do anything and everything to get to their goals. An administration which have been advocating for a "New Middle east", and stated that the Israeli war (well, the latest of them) was just a labor announcing the birth of that "New Middle east". And an administration who was recently castrated by the American people. We thank them for that, although we know the foreign police of the administrations to come wont change.

So my point is this: could be, no matter how low a percentage, but could it be that that the Syrian regime was not the one who did it ya Sheik Saad? because there are many other doubts and speculations leading any sane man or woman to think that the Syrian regime did not actually have much to win out of the assassination, while others did. Or could it be that the student will follow in the tutor's footsteps....

Gareeb wakes up one Saturday morning, performs his morning prayers, and looks over his inbox for a few minutes. Then he dozes off on his couch. He Then hears a bird singing outside his window; the sound is identical to that he used to hear outside his window during the peaceful weekend mornings in his hometown in Lebanon. So for a few seconds, just a few, he gets snatched out of place and time and could almost smell his mother's breakfast....... Then, he just coldly smiles and tries to extend those seconds as long as possible, for he realizes it was just another dream.

Life demands Changes all the time. Some changes are embraced with open arms (such as a great career move), while others are reluctantly accepted; we can't always pick and choose, I guess. But some must things tag along.

It doesn’t matter if I move from Dearborn, MI to Columbus, IN (An excruciating 6 hours drive, done three times in one month. But not so excruciating when you are on the phone, talking to people in Libnan half of the way.), some things can not be left behind under any circumstance.

Such as my very loyal, beloved and durable mountain bike; bought in 2000, I think. For some reason, I just can not leave it behind. Maybe because it was one of the first few things I paid for it with my OWN money. I was going to ship it to Lebanon or Dubai when I leave BTW. It is funny how we get attached to some of our belonging sometimes.

Then there is my drink of choice. Chai (Falet akeed) or Zhoorat (min eeden il hajje bi libnen). The choice depends on the day of the week, the weather, how I feel that day, ect. Not to forget, ofcourse, the tea pot (ibri2 ichai) just like the one we get in libnan; No american designs, otherwise it might taste differently :).. and finally, brown sugar ot (preferable, but essential)

One wishes that dragging roommates and some friends along could have been as easy.

The UNIFIL Fear

Ships at Beirut Port!!! Equipment being dropped at the beach in Tyre!!! the Magnificent French tank, "le Clerc", trudging on Lebanese soil for the first time ever!!!! thousands of troops coming to Lebanon in a very short time!!!!

A series of events that send a chill down my spine; especially after the announcement of Angela Merkel, the new German chancellor, who by the way is the new baby doll of the American influence in Europe, with the undefeated champion of this position -Blair- having his own battles at home. In that announcement, she explicitly stated that one of the duties of the German troops is ensure the security of Israel.... (we'll wait on the explanation). The history of biased of the United Nations (In of words, the United States Administration) exasperates my worries.

And then I read news of these forces patrolling our national waters, watching over security at Rafik Hariri's International Airport!!!!! That got me Furious. Our weeping PM and his gang (the Velentinos, as Gen Aoun calls them) always talk about autonomy, freedom and independence (Seyedeh. Horriyeh. Isti2lel. It always sounds better in Arabic) and then they do not mind all the other non-autonomous actions, so long they serve their goals. (w3eeshe ya horriyeh, as Aoun, Again says).

I recall some wonderful stories about the great relationship that exists between the old UNIFIL troops and the residents of the villages surrounding them, especially the Finnish (from Finland) troops. I just pray to God that these new fishy troops do not ruin it all; because I am surely not very comfortable with having troops from countries of questionable intentions, in addtion to big guns, and a somewhat fuzzy UN resolution. The loose security situation in Lebanon (i.e the freedom of Mosad to mingle around) only adds fuel to the fire.

الحقيقة العارية لعلاقة حزب الله وإيران

تتعمد الكثير من الدوائر الدولية تشبيه حزب الله بلعبة الدمى المتحركة التي يتولى السيطرة عليها بالتساوي كل من أيران وسوريا فهل الأمر صحيح ؟

لا شك بأن الغايات السياسية في عالمنا الحاضر هي التي تشكل التسميات والألقاب . على سبيل المثال تستعمل وكالة رويتر تسمية "حزب الله الشيعي الموالي لإيران " بينما تسمي الوكالة نفسها الثوار الإيرلنديين بالـ" الجيش الإيرلندي السري" أي تشير إليه بإسمه دون ذكر إنتمائه الديني . مع أن الحرب التي دارت منذ عشرينات القرن الماضي في إيرلندا الشمالية وحتى وقت قريب ، هي حرب دينية بين البروتستانت الموالين لبريطانيا والكاثوليك المدعومين من الفاتيكان ولو بالرعاية والإحتضان .

إن جذور حزب الله كمقاومة ضد الإحتلال وكتنظيم سياسي لبناني تعود إلى ما قبل ظهور إيران الإسلامية بسنوات . فالكثير من قادته وكوادره هم في الإساس من كوادر حركة المحرومين التي أسسها السيد موسى الصدر لحماية الجنوب من الإعتداءات الصهيونية في وقت مبكر من سبعينيات القرن الماضي . إضافة إلى كوادر أخرى من مريدي السيد محمد حسين فضل الله وحزب الدعوة وجمعية التعليم الديني وحركات شيعية متدينة أخرى . وكلها تنظيمات لبنانية صميمة إستضافت وساعدت المعارضين لنظام الشاه من أتباع الإمام الراحل روح الله الخميني ( روح الله إسمه العلم مثل عبد الله أو فضل الله أو ماشاء الله وليس لقبا للفخامة كما يعتقد البعض ) .

إنه لمن سخرية الأزمان على سبيل المثال أن يتهم حزب الله بأنه ينفذ السياسات الإيرانية في الوقت الذي كان إعلام الشاه الإيراني يتهم معارضيه الناشطين ضده من لبنان بأنهم عملاء للعرب (يقصد أنهم عملاء لموسى الصدر وياسر عرفات اللذان توليا تدريب الكثير من كوادر الثورة وأشهرهم وزير الدفاع السابق مصطفى شمران ) .

في صيف العام 1982 وبعد رفض قيادة حركة أمل المشاركة في التصدي للإجتياح الإسرائيلي حفظا للقرى والمدن اللبنانية من التدمير في حرب معروفة النتائج سلفا، خرج قسم من الجسم الحركي عن طوع القيادة المركزية وأسسوا ما عرف لاحقا بـ"حركة أمل الإسلامية" .

و قد تولى فصيل منها التصدي للقوات الإسرائيلية في المعركة الحقيقة الأولى على ابواب بيروت في منطقة خلدة الساحلية ، وقد خسرت إسرائيل وقتها دبابات إستعرض المقاتلون أحداها في شوارع برج البراجنة حيث أسروها فارغة من طاقمها الذي أنقذته الطائرات العمودية من قتل محتم .

كانت تلك البذور الإولى لما عرف فيما بعد بالمقاومة الإسلامية التي تأسست من تجمع قوى أمل الإسلامية بقيادة حسين الموسوي الرجل الثاني في حركة أمل قبل الإنشقاق، ومن مجموعات حزب الدعوة – فرع لبنان
ومن مجموعة متدينة ومثقفة كانت تأتلف تحت إسم إتحاد الطلبة المسلمين وهؤلاء كانوا من ألمقاومين الأوائل في القرى الواقعة تحت الإحتلال .

القصة التي ركبت تفاصيلها المخابرات الغربية تقول أن حزب الله هو فرع إيراني للحرس الثوري أسسه السفير السابق لإيران في دمشق علي محتشمي . حسنا إن هذا القول فيه خلط وتشويه .

القصة الحقيقية للكيان التنظيمي الأول للمقاومة الإسلامية تمثلت في فتوى دينية أصدرها الإمام الخميني كمرجع تقليد ( يتبعه الملايين من المؤمنين خارج إيران كما يتبع الكاثوليك توجيهات البابا مع فروقات هامة في التفاصيل ) السؤال وجهه ممثلون عن تجمع العلماء المسلمين المختلط من السنة والشيعة في لبنان وكان يرافقهم لزيارة الخميني الراحل ممثل حركة أمل في طهران السيد المعمم الشاب حسن نصرالله ومن ضمن الوفد كان الشيخ الشهيد راغب حرب وآخرين .

كان السؤال الموجه كالتالي " إسرائيل قوى عظمى ونحن قلة فما الحكم الشرعي وما واجبنا كمؤمنين تجاه إحتلال بلدنا " ؟

الخميني أذهل الموجودين حين قال " التقية سقطت وتحرم ممارستها ، هذا زمن الحسين وكربلاء ، عليكم أن تقاتلوا ما أستطعتم وسنساعدكم على قدر ما نستطيع "

وصلت الفتوى إلى لبنان فأنقسمت أمل بين فتوى المهادنة و عدم رمي النفس في التهلكة وبين القتال بدون إنتظار .
كلف المرشد الروحي للثورة الإسلامية الحرس الثوري بتقديم المساعدة اللوجستية والتسليحية للمقاتلين ففتحت مراكز التدريب في البقاع اللبناني حيث توجد سيطرة كاملة للمنشقين عن أمل .

كان الدور الذي أنيط بمحتشمي هو التنسيق مع السلطات السورية لتأمين مرور المدربين الإيرانيين من سوريا إلى لبنان وهي للمناسبة الطريق الوحيدة برا وبحرا وجوا .

ولكن هذا العمل البدائي سرعان ما أتسع بإلتفاف شيعة البقاع حول العلماء المعممين الذين أخذوا يحرضون أهل البقاع المعروفين بالشدة والحمية على مقاومة إسرائيل . وبرز من بين المحرضين في المساجد والحسينيات أربعة من القادة أشهرهم وقتها كان الشيخ صبحي الطفيلي ثم السيد عباس الموسوي فالسيد إبراهيم الأمين والسيد الشاب حسن نصرالله ...هذا في البقاع المحرر ، ماذا عن المناطق الواقعة تحت الإحتلال ؟

في منطقة الجنوب بشكل عام يكذب من يقول أن المقاومين الأوائل من كل الإتجاهات الفكرية بدأو القتال بناء لقرارات حزبية كما يدعي بعض الإستعراضيين .

في بلدة الدوير على سبيل المثال كانت تتواجد على تلالها قاعدة للحزب الشيوعي دمرها الطيران ولم تدخلها الدبابات بعد إحتلال المنطقة فتسلل العشرات من الشبان والأهالي ليلا وسحبوا كل ما سلم من سلاح ودفنوه في أماكن عشوائية . وهكذا حصل في كل القرى ومن هنا بدأت النواة الأولى للمقاومة اليسارية والقومية والإسلامية . لقد كانت المجمعات المقاتلة تضم فيما بينها خليطا من التيارات الفكرية ولكن ما يجمعها هو إنتمائها لقرية أو مدينة واحدة ما يجعل ترددهم على بعضهم البعض أمرا طبيعيا ولا يثير الشبهات .

في بداية العام 1983 بدأت الأتصالات تنتظم بين الجزء المحتل والجزء المحرر من لبنان وبدأت الإمدادات تصل بالسلاح والمال والتدريب . هنا ظهر على ساحة المقاومين عدو شرس جدا للجيش الإسرائيلي إسمه إتحاد الطلبة المسلمين ( إحدى الوية حزب الله التي أندمجت به منذ الدقيقة الأولى ) هؤلاء تخصصوا في العمليات النوعية المحكمة التنفيذ خصوصا التفجيرات بالعبوات المجوفة التي تدمر مدرعات الإحتلال العصية على القذائف الصاروخية .
ثم كانت الثورة الشعبية ضد الجيش المحتل حين حاولت قوة مدرعة المرور عنوة في مكان إقامة إحتفال عاشوراء في النبطية التي كانت تضم جموعا تزيد عن المئتي الف من أهالي الجنوب فثاروا ضد المحتل وأحرقوا المدرعات وشردوا القوة ركضا على الأقدام .

ثم جاء إعتقال الشيخ راغب حرب الذي أشعل ثورة عفوية أسست للمقاومين بالسلاح ملجأ وحضنا شعبيا متعاطفا وغير خائف ولا وجل . خصوصا أن خطب ومواقف الشيخ راغب كانت مسموعة من كل تيارات المجتمع حتى من الملحدين الذين ربطت بينهم وبين الشيخ الشعبي والقريب من سكان القرى المحتلة علاقة حوارية جيدة .

ولعل موقفه الذي هز حاجز الخوف ونزعه من قلوب الناس هو ذاك الموقف البطولي حين قطع طريقه على مقربة من منزله وعلى مرأى من القرويين في بلدة جبشيت قائد وحدة المخابرات في منطقة النبطية .

وكان ذو سمعة مرعبة ، فتجاهله الشيخ واكمل طريقه فقال له الظابط وهو يمد يده ليصافحه جئتك لأشرب معك فنجان قهوة فرد الشيخ :
" المصافحة إعتراف لكم بشرعية وجودكم وليس لكم مني إلا العداء " ثم أكمل طريقه .

وتابع الشيخ القاء الخطب المحرضة على القتال والمستخفة بالمحتلين فإغتيل وأشعل موته ثورة عارمة جذرت رفض الإحتلال شعبيا وفتحت الباب واسعا لقيام حركة مقاومة مسلحة سرعان ما إمتدت في كل الجنوب على الأخص وفي لبنان كله بشكل عام .

السؤال الذي يطرح نفسه هنا هل ما قام به الناس في النبطية وما قام به الشيخ راغب هو خدمة للفرس ؟ ام قيام بواجب مقاومة العدو ؟

وإذا علمنا أن السعودية وغيرها من الدول العربية ساعدت المحتلين وسهلت وغطت جرائمهم كالعادة تبييضا لصفحتهم مع ولي نعمتهم الأميركي ، فهل يتصور عاقل أن يرفض اللبنانيون مساعدة تدريبية وتسليحية من سوريا وإيران ؟

إنه السخف بعينه .. فمهما كان الموقف من النظامين السوري والإيراني على المستوى الشعبي فإن اليد التي تقاوم إحتاجت لمن يرفدها بأسباب الحياة لتستمر وتحرر الأرض . وقد كانت سوريا وإيران في ساحة الفعل فهل على المقاومين شتمهم أم شكرهم ؟

حتى ولو كان لهم مصالح وغايات ككل الدول التي تبحث عن مصلحتها . فكيف و إن كانت مصلحة سوريا وإيران تلتقي مع مصلحة المقاومين في كسر التفرد والسيطرة الأميركية الإسرائيلية على المنطقة ولبنان فهل كان مطلوبا قصف طهران ودمشق بدلا عن مقاومة المحتلين ؟

وقتها أيضا إنخرطت حركة امل بقيادة بري في العمل المقاوم السري ما رفد المقاومة النخبوية وقتها بمد شعبي هائل أحكم السيطرة شعبيا على قرى بكاملها وجعل منها مناطق محررة .

في ذلك الوقت ذاع في الجنوب صيت الحرس الثوري الإيراني الذي يخرج المقاتلين النوعيين في معسكرات التدريب التي اقامها في البقاع ليس لنشر النفوذ الفارسي كما يدعي البلهاء بل تنفيذا لأمر ولي الفقيه المنطلق من قاعدة دينية بوجوب نصرة المظلوم . على الأقل كان الوضع كذلك في زمن الراحل الخميني ولم يتغير مع خليفته الخامنئي مع العلم أن علاقة حزب الله الدينية بإيران تماثل علاقة البطريرك صفير بروما وبالتالي السيطرة على القرار السياسي تعود للقيادة المحلية ضمن معطيات الشرع والفقه الإسلامي . بينما العلاقة مع الدولة والحكومة الإيرانية مرت بأزمات متعددة ومشكلات ظلت تحت الرماد . وحسمت لمصلحة علاقة مميزة وحصرية لحزب الله مع أيران الثورة اي القيادة الدينية للمرشد والمؤسسات التابعة له مباشرة والبعيدة عن سيطرة العقلية البيروقراطية للدولة .

أما عن التمويل الإيراني فهو أيضا يخضع لاساطير لست صحيحة بتاتا ، على سبيل المثال فأن المساعدات التي تقدمها المؤسسة الدينية في إيران هي نتاج مال المسلمين الذين يدفعون واجبا ما قيمته عشرين بالمئة من أرباحهم للولي الشرعي وهو عند الشيعة كل مرجع تقليد مشهور بالعدل والورع والأعلمية في الفقه وإستباط الأحكام .

وعلى سبيل المثال فرجل مثل الخوئي وبعده السيستاني تتبع لهما مؤسسة مالية يصرف منها على المشاريع الخيرية تبلغ قيمة موجوداتها عشرات المليارات من الدولارات وهو مرجع واحد من عدة مراجع . والخميني أفتى قبل رحيله بتقديم أموال الخمس للمقاومة وللعلم فقط فأن خمس أحد رجالات الكويت المتدينين يبلغ سنويا ستة وعشرين مليون دينار كويتي وهو المرحوم حسين بهمن فما بالك بملايين المريدين .

بالطبع يحصل حزب الله على دعم ساحق ومؤثر من إيران ولكنه ينحصر في المؤسسة الدينية فقط ومشاكله مع المؤسسات الحكومية معروفة للأوساط المطللعة .

على سبيل المثال تلك الأزمة الحادة التي حكمت علاقة حزب الله بالرئيس الإيراني خاتمي الذي صرح نائبه عطاء الله مهاجراني لصحيفة أميركية قبل إنسحاب إسرائيل من لبنان بأن المقاومة ستسلم سلاحها وتتخلى عن حماية الحدود فور إنسحاب إسرائيل من الجنوب في وقت كان كل العالم يتحزر عن الموقف الحقيقي الذي سيتخذه السيد نصرالله والذي رفض البوح به حتى يبقي الأمر ورقة بيده ضد الإسرائيليين . هذا التصريح تسبب بعلاقة غير مريحة بين دولة إيران ومقاومة لبنان وهو موقف يبين أن القرار اللبناني مستقل عن الفقه الديني العام الذي يربط ما بين المرجعية والمريدين والمقلدين في لبنان .

فهذا نائب رئيس إيران يقرر وحسن نصرالله يقرر شيئا معاكسا فمن كانت له المصداقية في التنفيذ ؟

هذا المثال يبين إستقلالية القرار اللبناني الحزب اللهي .
وبالتالي إن سلاحا متقدما تقدمه إيران للمقاومين ليس مطلوبا بالمقابل أن يستحصل على أذن خاص لإستعماله وليس له مقابل سياسي مفروض وبالتأكيد يقدم حزب الله مصلحة لبنان على مصلحة أي دولة أخرى بما فيها إيران وقد أثبتت التجارب ذلك . ولكن لو إستفادت سوريا وأيران من موقع قوة لحزب الله فهل المطلوب منعهم من ذلك ؟ تماما كما تتعاون دول العالم على تبادل المنافع والمصالح ولكن ليس على حساب أوطانها القطرية .

I recall about a week ago, a friend telling me he has an inside information about conflicts withinthe Hariri camp. At the time, I dismissed the idea, assume that it’s just another Lebanese Rumor.

Turn out, the rumors are true. Read this Article from the new Al-akhbar newspaper. Also look for a similar article at Addiyar.

One more reason to believe that Saniora is not the man for the job, given his past, present and forseen future. He is even being criticized by his own people. وشهد شاهد من قومه

We do not need a tear shedding PM who caves in at the first chance, does not seem to know how to Negotiate (a problem stemming from the fact that he submits to the belief that Lebanon is weak) and has still to start "to put together" a rebuilding plan, let alone starting with it.

Also, I pray that Waleed beik and PM Saniora utilize their “Regional and International Rleations”, which Waleed Beik was talking about in his latest press conference, because I would like to go home soon without having to pass by the Jordanian/Israeli check points in Amman. But those “”Regional and International Relations/friendships” are unlikely to get that resolved. If that would be the case, it would be more dignifying to take the long trip through Damascus.

I am not sure if anyone has watched Zahi Wehbi's "Khalleek bil Beit" lately. Inviting three members of the Red Cross and Islamic relief organization, he ran a documentary about a girl Called Zainab murdered in Qana during the last Israeli aggression, next with her childhood friend and in her mother's lap.

I was struck by her family's endurance, her mom's murmurs and her little brother's intricate description of time of the vicious incident. So struck, I couldn’t help but weep like child; something very uncommon for someone like myself.

I tried searching for Pictures of Zainab, but failed to find any. But please keep an eye on "Khaleek bil Beit" to watch the video, whoever it is posted.

Finally, I convey my best regards to Zahi wehbi and the cast of "khaleek bil Beit" , who have always touched my heart with their different documentary.

To all you losers out there, to all the liberals, and especially, the peace-loving ones.

Many are asking who won the war and who lost. Should HA keep their weapons, and should they disarm?

I have been reading blogs all nights and many have the attitudes and are asking the questions listed above and more.....

Well, some facts are being ignored and the whole issue is being unwisely underrated.

Fact # 1. Unfortunately for us Lebanese, almost everyone in the world has some interest that starts, ends or just happens to intersect in our beloved country. United States, Israel, EU, Iran, Syria, Russia, the rest of the arab world, etc.

United States, to get their "New Middle-East" and secure their grab on the world's largest oil reserves. Also to make us all live the Democratic (as per US standards, we have to be precise) mode of the AMERICAN WAY OF LIVING..

Israel, to secure the Northern borders of a states built on the skull and bones of the Palestinian people; Also to secure their control over the waters of Litany in Lebanon. Lebanon, in its pluralistic dimensions is also a threat to the "Jewish State"... Believe me, if the Israeli’s could find a way to justify a great Arab exodus (including the Israeli Arabs, know as the Arabs of the 48) they would have done that a long time ago. That is, if we want to ignore the ideological interests of the "Israelis" orthodox Jews. Also, now they have another 2 reasons: being forced to withdraw from Lebanon in 200o and having to shamefully retreat their “Undefeatable Army” baring a having losses in death and casualties, in additions to tens of their sophisticated tanks and armored vehicles (they won’t forget that)

Syria and Iran (they come in a package; also US and Israel are usually presented as a couple as well).... well. Syria and Iran, and we can maybe add Russia to the package, want to reduce the US dominance in the middle east do secure their own interests: Syrian government staying in power, the Irani Nuclear projects, Iran's ambition to be a major player in the region, Russia to regain its golden days of the USSR and come back as a contender to the US in the world; i.e. secure their own interests.

As for the rest of the Arab world, which can be lumped into a saudi-egyptian-jordanian front, and those who follow!! These three countries, do not wish to see Iran as a major player in the region, thereby reduce their own part, which has been reduced to a “Yes Dear” of the US interests in the region. Also, In Saudi Arabia, like much of the gulf region in general, if you are not a local, you are second degree human being, racism is a concept unheard of by a large percentage of people in the country, not to mention that women's driving privileges is still being debates. In Egypt, moubarak and his ruling party had to close up voting stations in the last elections in order to win. And ahhh, the american democracy; they gave moubarak a small slap on the hand and asked them not to do it again. As for Jordan, we all know better than to say anything about the "king", otherwise.......... (for all those who are rolling their eye balls, that happens in syria as well) so Lebanon, Hassan nasrallah, pluralism, freedom of speech and press... That doesn’t work for US-Arab countries; oh not to mention the shia cresent...

Fact # 2. For all those who believe that Lebanon will not be a playground for the international community's interests, YOU better wake up...... Soon.

So using my own limited knowledge of the secret underworld of politics. I look at things and wonder where do I stand.?? I mean, I do not want Lebanon to be a playground where the world powers do their dirty work; that is for sure. I do not want US and Israeli dominance either. I like my kids to have the Lebanese way of living (one of the Lebanese life styles that is, thanks to pluralism. And I mean that in a very positive way ). I want to be able to speak my mind, be able to live in honor and dignity, in relative safety, and I definitely want my mother and sisters to drive.

So given what was mentioned above, in addition to the grueling reality of having to take someone’s side (yes we have to). I thought I'd rather where most shia in Lebanon; not because I am shia and therefore safety un numbers, or because I love sayyed Hassan, but because it makes the most logical choice. What did we ever gain from the US, Israel or the Arab world; nothing but killing, lying and one betrayal after another. But do not get me wrong, I am shia, but I do not want an Islamic state in Lebanon (or southern Lebanon) because it simply can not work. I also said that I'd like to be able to speak my mind, something you can not do in Syria. But siding with the interests of these two countries and being a fully fledged partner in this alliance (contrary to what many might believe, that we are being used as a tool by these countries) has brought us dignity and pride more than anyone could have ever believed an Arab would get, something I can always tell my kids about. " The day Israel destroyed our homes and villages, but its mighty army could not set foot in the South without paying a heavy price and retreating like cowards back where they came from..” something that the world powers put together can never take from me.

Since the day I was a kid, Living my early childhood years in southern Lebanon and then moving to Beirut, I've always heard this slogan: "Jabal 3amel, ma aradak ahadon bi soo2, illa wa qasama llaho dhahraho nisfayn" which, in simple terms, translates to "oh Jabal Amel, God's wrath would fall upon anyone who would ever wish you harm".

You can call it a Belief, Myth or even propaganda, But watching pictures (whatever is leaked from the tight grip of the Israeli news blockade) of the Israeli tanks burning in jabal 3amel (this one is in sahel il Kheyem) and the wounded soldier is just fortifying my "belief" in that slogan.

I keep going back to these couple of pictures from my last trip to Lebanon, looking at their smallest of details and wondering what happened and is still happening over there. How was it when the legendary Army, with all its air force superiority and Special Forces could not hold it for 24 hours? How the people in that town and others nearby lived through those days?
